In the tradition of Charlotte, Babe and other talking creatures, the family musical "Click, Clack, Moo" stars some equally accomplished cows, who are also strategic thinkers. Not only are these bovines highly verbal, they're techies and, as the audience at Westport Playhouse on March 27 will learn, they can drive a hard bargain too. In "Click, Clack, Moo," Farmer Brown's granddaughter Jenny comes to visit, with her laptop. This prompts him to declare the barn a "tech-free zone." But without Jenny's laptop, the cows can't type their important messages. So, the animals organize and, essentially, go on strike to make their point. TheatreUSA's production of "Click, Clack, Moo" is based on Doreen Cronin's 2001 children's picture book, illustated by Betsy Lewin. It won the Caldecott Medal and was hailed by the American Library Association as a "tongue-in-cheek story about bovine agitators locking horns with Farmer Brown in a battle of will and wit that results in a comically satisfying conclusion."
Adapting it for the stage, as writer Billy Aronson did, also called for some updating. In the original book, for instance, the cows used electric typewriters. Now they've upgraded to laptops."Click, Clack, Moo" the musical, with music by Brad Alexander and lyrics by Kevin Del Aquila, ran off-Broadway in 2009. Time Out New York called it, "Udderly fabulous! Given Theatreworks USA's track record of turning classic kids' lit into magical musicals, 'Click, Clack, Moo' just reaffirms their reputation."
