Meet Mystery Writer Mary Jane Clark

For three decades, Mary Jane Clark worked in the demanding world of TV news and then, with what seems like amazing ease, transitioned to best-selling mystery writer. She visits the Fairfield Library on Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. to talk about her newest book, "To Have and To Kill." Her talk is followed by a lunch at the library. Although the segue from news to mystery novel writing might seem a surprising shift, in making it Clark chose to follow the well-known directive to write what you know. Her first series of novels, which includes twelve mysteries, takes place in KEY News, a fictional television world that functions as the mother ship for characters who venture out to cover stories and then get drawn into mystery, murder and suspense. Her newest book, "To Have and To Kill," published this month, inaugurates a new Mary Jane Clark series, the wedding cake mysteries, which Publishers Weekly calls "a promising new cozy series." Clark explains that its inspiration came slightly out of left field, as she told Chris Cuomo on "Good Morning, America," while watching Martha Stewart on TV. "The idea for that came when I was watching a morning show segment on beautiful wedding cakes. Each cake was made for a various destination wedding…and I started to think...wouldn't it be fun to write about a young woman who gets involved with mystery and suspense as she makes wedding cakes for different brides and grooms, with different family and friends, with different circumstances in different locations?"

Meet this talented writer and hear about how she constructs her mysteries that Library Journal calls "impossible to put down." Her talk and the lunch following are free but require reservations. They can be made on the library's website.
