Maria Bartiromo Questions Success

CNBC anchor Maria Bartiromo has interviewed Wall Street's biggest names. She's an expert at probing their financial philosophies and business savvy. But, as she told NPR host Scott Simon, her number one financial adviser has always been her mother. "My mother was always instilling in me: save, save, save - and even as a young girl, if I wanted something as simple as an ice cream cone, I would say to her, Mom, the ice cream man is here, can I go get an ice cream cone? And she would say to me, well, you can have it but how will you pay for it? How much change have you saved?" she said. Besides her mother's enduring advice, the wisdom of many newsworthy figures Bartiromo's talked to also resonates for her. Out of it has come a new book,  "The Ten Laws of Enduring Success," co-written with Kathryn Whitney, which examines ten attributes, including self-knowledge, initiative and integrity, among others, that exemplify real success.

"I spoke with people like Jack Welch and Bill Gates and Warren Buffett and Joe Torre and I asked them all about this so-called stuff in their lives and then I asked them, is that what success is? And so many people told me that purpose, knowing what matters, is so important, because it puts things into perspective for you," she told NPR's Simon. As she said on Huffington Post, "I wrote this book because I felt it was a crucial question to explore. This is a motivational book and a reminder that many of the tools for success are not external but entirely within us. I hope this book helps people tap into them."

Maria Bartiromo talks about her book's defining list of laws for success, the impressive people she consulted and the lessons they imparted, at the Westport Library on June 8 at 7:30 p.m. Books will be available for signing. For more information, visit The Westport Library's website.
