Make Friends with Yuck

If you suffer from any of these conditions, agrizoophobia (fear of wild animals), arachnophobia (fear of spiders), blennophobia (fear of slime), ophidiophobia (fear of snakes) or scoleciphobia (fear of worms), Yuck Day at Earthplace on October 30 won't make you a happy camper. Because its mission is to introduce visitors to slimy, crawly, slippery and hairy things, including a ten foot Burmese python at the snake show, wiggly earthworms, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and more.

Once you've met its gallery of the ickiest, squishiest, yuckiest, take a break and settle in for some crafts with a Halloween theme: create your own bat or footprint ghost. Revived, you can head back for more of the y-word. There's a movie about hairy houseflies to watch, a soggy log whose crawly residents you'll want to investigate, a trail walk to find mushrooms, unusual insects and other gross but genuinely natural stuff. Face painting and more craft projects are ongoing. And at the end of the day, you'll come away with a new appreciation for the interesting, though non-snuggly, creatures you've met. Yuck Day runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7. For more information, visit Earthplace's website.
