Land Trust Hosts Clive Cussler

New York Times best-selling author and preservationist Clive Cussler has discovered over 60 historically significant underwater wreck sites. His finds include the Confederate submarine C.S.S. Hunley, the first submarine to sink a ship in battle, and the remains of the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic's survivors. He talks about this absorbing hobby and gives a lecture on "Discovering Adventure in Your Hometown," at the Aspetuck Land Trust’s annual meeting and reception at Southport's Pequot Library on June 24 at 7 p.m.  Both are open to the public and free.

Cussler is an American adventure novelist with fans in 100 countries and a readership of more than 125 million. He began writing novels in 1965 and his beloved, long-running character, Dirk Pitt, first appeared in 1973. His first non-fiction work,"The Sea Hunters," was released in 1996.

Cussler's success at recovering lost historic wrecks and artifacts is backed by his training and knowledge of maritime and American naval history. He also created a non-profit organization, National Underwater and Marine Agency, which sent divers to locate the Hunley in 1995.

Cussler is a fellow of both the Explorers Club of New York and London's Royal Geographic Society. His wife, Janet Horvath, is a Fairfield native. His new adventure novel, "The Spy," will be available for purchase and signing at the evening's reception.

The Aspetuck Land Trust is a non-profit Connecticut corporation with a mission to preserve open space and the natural resources of Easton, Fairfield, Weston and Westport for public benefit. It was formed in 1966 by leading area conservationists. During the annual meeting portion of the evening, the Land Trust's President, Princie Falkenhagen, will oversee the election of new board members. The Land Trust's key 2009 accomplishments will also be highlighted. For more information, visit The Pequot Library's website or the Aspetuck Land Trust's.
