Kids Focus on Photos

Photography is now viewed as a powerful tool to encourage kids' curiosity, language development and even reading and social skills. And it doesn't hurt that it's also one of the coolest activities going.

With all of this in mind, photographs are the inspiration and the art form at Westport Arts Center's workshop-cum-family entertainment on Jan. 9, from 2-4 p.m. Bring some photographs and a digital camera and then, take more photos after learning pointers from professional photographer Pamela Einarsen. Another pro, Michael Elsden, will demonstrate how to make a pin-hole camera, so visitors can craft their own. (These were the earliest known cameras, without a lens, that some claim date back to the ancient Greeks.) Also planned are drop-ins at the Wacky Costume Photo booth for photo portraits, sketching from photos and working on other photo-related projects.

When you think about all photographs can do, illuminate beauty, record our history and even, protect our health, it's astounding. French filmmaker Jean Luc Godard summarized their power when he said, "Photography is truth." For kids, Westport Arts Center's workshop will start them on their own photographic path to this goal. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling (203) 222-7070 or reserving them on the WAC website.
