Sundays this winter, kids don't have to hang around the house and be contented with doing quiet activities. Instead, they can rev up at the stimulating, hands-on programs for Sunday Explorers at Stamford Museum and Nature Center. It hosts a series of Sunday programs, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that highlight a different activity each week. On Sunday Dec. 26, kids can work off their holiday calories and post-Christmas doldrums with a Holiday Hike. Actually, several short hikes will be lead throughout the day, with scavenger hunts and a crazy craft table with odds and ends materials to choose from. On the agenda is a National Candy Cane Day celebration with candy cane hot chocolate.
Sunday Jan. 9's explorers take a look at Animals in Winter. They'll learn some different strategies animals use to survive the changing -- and challenging -- weather. Joining the group to show how they're equipped for the season, are a rabbit and turtle. From 1:30-3 p.m., there are ongoing hikes up to the sheep barn to check out the extra layers of winter coats of farm residents.
Animal Superhero Day is the explorers' theme for Sunday, Jan. 16. Join in at Overbrook Nature Center for a look at some animals who qualify and kids will also design and make a superhero cape for keeping.
Sunday Jan. 23, no matter the weather, is Snow Day! The Overbrook Nature Center is headquarters for a make your own snow and snowflake slime project. If there's real snow around, snow painting will also get under way. Creating special snowflakes, the non-melting kind, will be a craft project. Sunday Explorers continues through the winter, with plenty of rich and rewarding things for kids to do and learn. The program is included in admission which is $5-$10.
