Judy Collins Performs with Spirit

A folk music deity, singer-songwriter Judy Collins has broadened the world of American popular music with her intelligence and graceful style. And, since her debut album in 1961, decades of fans have worshipped her, with good reason. First, there is her ethereal singing voice. And there's how she pushed the rarely-recorded music of giants like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger into the public consciousness. In the 1960s, Collins also championed up-and-coming musical talents, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman and Richard Farina. Many people came to know the hymn "Amazing Grace" because of her riveting 1972 a cappella recording.

Candor and perserverance are also among Collins's gifts. She has bravely gone public to discuss the personal turmoil and tragedy that have touched her: alcoholism, bulimia, multiple sclerosis and the suicide of her son. Her commitment to causes has also inspired. Currently, she volunteers for UNICEF, advocates abolishing landmines and speaks about suicide prevention. Don't miss the opportunity to see the legendary Judy Collins on September 25 at Downtown Cabaret. She'll perform two shows, at 5:30 p.m and 8:30 pm. Tickets are $66 and $76. To borrow Stephen Stills's description of her, she'll thrill you to the marrow. For information and tickets, visit Downtown Cabaret's website.
