"Jigsaw Jones" Solves A Sticky One

Puzzle-loving kids can assist self-appointed elementary school class detective, Theodore "Jigsaw" Jones, in solving the mystery at the center of ArtsPower's musical production, "Jigsaw Jones" at Westport Playhouse, on March 6. Appropriate for kids in grades 1-4, the puzzle Jigsaw and his sidekick buddy, Mila, want to figure out is, who's the tricky class clown sliming kids in Mrs. Gleason's class? Evidence to be collected and cracked includes secret codes and other stumpers that'll put young audience members in problem-solving mode.

"Jigsaw Jones" is based on the kids' mystery series by James Preller. His first book was published in 1997 and since then, nearly 40 more have given Jigsaw and Mila novel challenges to tackle and have also kept young readers enthralled. One of Preller's other books, "Bystander," was named a 2009 Junior Library Guild Selection. On his blog, Preller describes how important he feels "Bystander," his book about bullying is. Library Journal's review draws the same conclusion. “Preller has perfectly nailed the middle school milieu, and his characters are well developed with authentic voices. The novel has a parable-like quality, steeped in a moral lesson, yet not ploddingly didactic. The action moves quickly, keeping readers engaged. The ending is realistic: there’s no strong resolution, no punishment or forgiveness. Focusing on the large majority of young people who stand by mutely and therefore complicitly, this must-read book is a great discussion starter.”

ArtsPower's "Jigsaw Jones" will jumpstart its own conversations and give kids a great theater experience. Performances at Westport Playhouse take place at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $15. For more information, visit the Playhouse's website.
