History Takes Flight at The Aerodrome

Take a flyer on a day trip to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and very likely your kids will be revved, especially if they get to ride in an open-cockpit 1929 biplane. Saturday, August 28, the Rhinebeck, New York Aerodrome celebrates the 101st birthday of its1909 Bleriot. The plane was designed by French engineer Louis Bleriot, who is credited with inventing the monoplane (one set of wings) and who flew across the English Channel in 1909.The Rhinebeck Aerodrome's “History of Flight” show features vintage planes in addition to the Bleriot XI. A Curtiss D pusher, and the Hanriot also make appearances. On view in hangars or on the grass, are World War I vintage aircraft, including the Albatros, the Avro 504K, the Caudron G.III, two Fokkers,  D.VII,  the Nieuport II, the Sopwith Camel, the de Havviland Tiger Moth, and more. Biplane rides in four-passenger New Standard D-25s are given before and after the shows. There is an Aerodrome Canteen and picnic tables, to keep visitors' appetites from soaring. Air shows take place every Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting) until October 17. Gates open and biplane rides begin at 10 a.m,  The air show runs from 2-4 p.m. and the display is open until 5 p.m. Admission is $5-$20.
