Head to Hawaii and Hula

Spread out your picnic supper and lounge on Pequot Library's great lawn but be ready to hop up and hula. First, experts show you how it's done with a hula and percussive music show featuring stories and performances about Hawaiian culture and history. Then, it's your turn to try Polynesian dances. Luckily, individual lessons are on the evening's agenda.   And it's not as easy as it looks. The website www.wailuabay.com has some pointers:  when dancing the hula, it's important to "become one" with the dance. Every body movement represents something and "in addition to this, the hands are very important in the hula dance as well. When the individual is dancing the hula they may be imitating a palm tree, war, plants, and even animals." So, be sure to limber up beforehand and then, let yourself imagine the trade winds blowing. There'll also be time to contemplate stories about fishing, surfing, picking seashells & more. This engaging Hawaiian event, on July 7 from 6-7:30 p.m., will charm all ages -- toddlers through seniors -- and offer an exotic evening escape. The performance begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. If it rains, everything moves indoors. For more information, visit the Pequot Library's website.
