Get a Whiff of the Garlic Festival

Garlic is a multi-talented multi-tasker. It's been touted as a cholesterol lowerer, as good for the heart, as an anti-fungal, even as an aphrodisiac. According to the website Garlic-Central.com, it even repels mosquitoes.  No matter how you slice it, garlic comes out smelling like a rose and those of us who adore its taste, can't get our fill.

But here's a chance to try: at the Connecticut Garlic & Harvest Festival. This pungent, two day annual event in Behtlehem, Connecticut, October 9 and 10, offers garlic cooking demonstrations, garlic growing lectures and a gaggle of garlic specialty food vendors with goodies to sample and buy, including garlic dips, spreads, cheeses, and oils. Drop in at the Festival's produce stands to inspect the fresh, locally-grown garlic, as well as other stunning fall produce. And then there's the food court. Its garlic gone wild menu includes homemade roasted garlic sausage with peppers and onions, garlic marinated steak sandwiches, garlic roast pork sandwiches, deep fried garlic and garlic ice cream, among other specialties. For the kids, who might not be entranced by garlic, there are rides, live music and games. The Festival's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 and $6. For more information and directions, visit the Festival's website.
