Festival Explores the Natural World

Wend your way to northwest Connecticut for a once-a-year family event where live animals, stimulating educational activities, nature walks and more will shake your kids out of their summer doldrums. This festival, a highpoint of the season, features lots of never-before-seen-up-close birds and reptiles, as well as exhibits, vendors, food, music and a full plate of interactive opportunities for exploring the natural world. The 43rd annual Sharon Audubon Festival, Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15, is designed for seasoned naturalists and young explorers, with plenty to do for both. Scheduled programs include: Exploring Ford Pond by Canoe, Restoration of Timber Chestnuts, Letterboxing, Swarming Behavior of Honey Bees, Managing Invasive Plants and Non-chemical Weed Control, Orienteering, Reptiles, Papermaking and much more. Ongoing activities include a live animal exhibit from the Beardsley Zoo and a kids' Merry Marsh Activity Tent.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Bill and Brian Robinson introduce various species of birds and reptiles in their live animal program. At 3:30 p.m., falconer Jennifer Pena shows off her avians and explains the ins and outs of falconry. Atka the Wolf, an ambassador from South Salem, New York's Wolf Conservation Center, drops in on Sunday at 1 p.m. The festivities close on Sunday with singer/comedian Nancy Tucker's performance. Gates are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. (No pets are allowed inside the gates.) Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under.
