Fans Forage For Books

Think books are passe? You wouldn't know it from the line that forms at one of the best book buying opportunities around: The Westport Library book sale. Electronic reading devices are making inroads, for sure, but books haven't gone the way of the dodo yet. In fact, for many they are prized acquisitions to be cherished more now than ever. And the library sale is a treasure trove of them with 80,000 items to sift through. (Assuming you're a high speed sifter.)  Visit the sale tents for fiction and nonfiction books in every category, art, photography and other special titles as well as an entire tent filled with children’s books. Another brims with audio books CDs, DVDs, videos, and vinyl records.

This year (the sale's 17th) there are signed and inscribed first editions from authors Lawrence Block, Mary Higgins Clark, Jonathan Kellerman, Carl Hiaasen, Tony Hillerman, P.D. James, Elmore Leonard, Sara Paretsky, Robert Parker, Mickey Spillane, and Margaret Truman. Each one is $6 or less. Other rare books include editions of J.D. Salinger, Willa Cather and more. The Westport Library sale takes place Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, July 19, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with 50% off and Tuesday, July 20, from 9 a.m.until 1 p.m., when everything is free, but cash donations are appreciated. Proceeds from the book sale, organized by the Friends of the Westport Library, benefit the Library. For more information, visit The Westport Library's website.
