Express Yourself at Draw On!

In 2006, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art came up with a brilliant stroke, creating a community-wide art event called Draw On!, even enlisting support from illustrious artists, among them, Maurice Sendak. This year's sixth Draw On! which runs from March 26-April 9, offers a range of art activities at many venues around Fairfield County (click here for a list). On March 26 and 27, the mothership, The Aldrich Museum, presents its own slate of lively and engrossing family activities for Draw On!, again reviving its original idea that art is a tool for learning and self-expression.

From 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, participants can view six films from The Weston Woods Animated Short Film Festival. Each is based on a Scholastic children’s book including "In the Night Kitchen" by Maurice Sendak and "Ish" by Peter Reynolds, who is also involved with Draw On! and created its logo. After the screenings, visitors will let their imaginations roam and create their own quirky characters. On Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m., there are more Draw On! Family Drop-In Activities, including making shoe rubbings, collage drawings and mouse portraits. After making a rubbing of their shoes, visitors add all sorts of detail to turn it into a colorful character. They can also make portraits of themselves and combine these drawings into a personal collage. There is a Dress-Up-and-Draw activity and a Mirror Portrait activity to stimulate inspiration. With a mouse, another kind of portrait can come to life, as part of a computer flash game. All the Museum's Draw On! activities are included in admission, which is $4 and $7.
