Escher Exhibit Intrigues

One hundred and thirty drawings by one of the world's most intriguing (some might say baffling) graphic artists, M.C. Escher, are on view at The New Britain Museum of American Art. The exhibit, "M.C. Escher: Impossible Reality," features some of the artist's most famous, "mind bending" designs, including "Ascending and Descending" and "Drawing Hands." A rare lithograph stone used to make another of Escher's famous drawings, "Flat Worms," is also part of the exhibit.Maurits Cornelius Escher (1898-1972) was born in the Netherlands. Though he was a poor student, he seems to have been intuitively brilliant in math, and his drawings demonstrate it. They depict sophisticated mathematical relationships that he was able to assimilate and re-create artistically. However, you don't have to be a math whiz -- or even like math -- to see how innovative and unusual Escher's drawings are. The New Britain Museum's exhibit also presents his woodcuts, lithographs, sculptures and sketches, which all give a dimensional look at Escher's creative process. The exhibit is open until mid-November. Admission is $8-$10. For hours and directions, visit the NBMAA website.
