'Dinner with Friends' Dishes on Marriage

"Here's to matrimony, the high sea for which no compass has yet been invented!" He-nrich Heine's pearl of wisdom describes Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies' droll and thought-provoking play, "Dinner with Friends," being staged at The Westport Playhouse. The New York Times called it "A true feast...sober, wise and extremely funny." The play follows two couples who are best friends. When one couple decides to divorce, the other couple is propelled into doing an inspection of their own marriage.

Playwright Margulies is an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Drama. In 1992, he won an Obie for Best New American Play for "Sight Unseen." He has written many other plays including:  "The Loman Family Picnic," "Pitching to the Star," and "Zimmer," and "The God of Vengeance."

Discussing "Dinner with Friends," Margulies told enotes.com, it was "written to reflect observations I'm having at that time in my life ... All around us, relationships are changing, marriages are breaking up. It's those notions of impermanence, the yearning for something else that I'm tapping into.'' "Dinner with Friends" runs at the Westport Playhouse ffrom June 1-19. It features  Mary Bacon, David Aaron Baker, Steven Skybell and Jenna Stern.
