Cuba Family Day Vibrates with Color

Cuba is only 90 miles from Florida, making its eleven million citizens nearly next door neighbors.  But until last year, when President Obama lifted most travel restrictions between the countries, Cuba's rich cultural life has been nearly invisible to us. Katonah Museum of Art's current exhibit, Cuba Avant-Garde, raises the curtain to reveal many vibrant and varied paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and mixed media works by 42 Cuban-born artists. The art reflects fascinating details of life in Cuba, with larger themes from the country's history and politics, including colonialism, emigration and exile, as well as religious, gender and race issues, also woven in. This bold, energetic display is also the backdrop for Katonah Museum's Cuba Family Day from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, August 8. Tour the exhibit and then, at 1:30 p.m., listen to children's book illustrator Edel Rodriguez read from some of his works, including "Mama does the Mambo," "Oye," "Celia! A Song for Celia Cruz," and "Sergio Saves the Game!" He'll sign copies of his books afterwards. At 2:30 p.m., master the salsa with dancer Desiree Sanchez Meineck. Then, roll up your sleeves to dig into hands-on Caribbean-themed art projects or join several gallery activities.  The cost is $5 per person. The Cuba Avant-Garde exhibit runs until September 19.
