Chow Down at the Chowderfest

For some of us, fall demands certain food needs be met: dishes dotted with apples or pumpkin, roasted brussel sprouts, baked squash and savory, robust soups.  Mystic Seaport heeds this primoridal, seasonal hunger call on October 9-11, with its tantalizing Chowderfest.  From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., indulge in seven types of clam chowder (the classics, as well as new varieties, such as Blue Crab Apple Chowder) prepared by seven different restaurants. Linger at the chowder course or move on to lobster rolls and chorizo stuffed Quahog clams (among others.) The dessert menu (apple fritters, pear strudel with vanilla sauce, and more) fulfills our (all season) sweet tooth jones, making it worth leaving room for.

Though food is the centerpiece, there is a smorgasbord of special activities families can enjoy postprandially. Visit the children's museum for a "clammy" craft project and story telling. Step onto two tugs docked nearby, along the waterfront. Kids will recognize one of them, Canadian character tug "Theodore Too" because it's based on a popular children's TV show character. "Pegasus" is a restored working tug. Both can be boarded and explored.  Mystic admission is $15-$24. Food tickets are sold in books for $5 and $10. For more information, visit Mystic's website.
