Chill at Christmas in July

"Christmas comes but once a year." Wrong! Unpack the ornaments, because the annual Christmas In July at Sheffield Island family excursion, Saturday and Sunday, lets visitors check in with Santa at breakfast (Saturday only) and get a jump on the present list. Take the ferry to Sheffield Island for the Santa meet-and-greet as well as kids' holiday crafts, fashioning holiday ornaments and nautically themed gifts. Visitors not only shift the season, they time-travel to the Victorian era. The historic, 141-year-old lighthouse is trimmed with charming, old-time decorations and the special guest, Santa Claus, greets visitors as the ferry lands on Sheffield Island. Snacks and beverages are on hand for purchase. Other highlights include strolling the nature trail through the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, beach combing, picnicking and relaxing on the lighthouse's lawn.

The Norwalk Seaport Association's Christmas in July is free but requires ferry tickets. They are $22 for adults, $12 for children 4-12, $5 for children 3 and younger. Reservations are recommended and can be made at (203) 838-9444 (weekdays) or (203) 838-2898 (weekends). The ferry schedule can be accessed here.
