CraftWestport is a multi-tasker's dream. This annual roundup of 160 top-of-the-line contemporary craft artists, among them master weaver Tina Puckett of Winsted, Conn, is the place to take the pulse of the contemporary craft field and see works by its visionary artists. It's also a terrific way to get a jumpstart on finding presents for friends and family on your holiday gift list. The art displayed at CraftWestport, a national show now in its 35th year, includes drawings, metal jewelry, wearable fiber, ornaments, creations of leather, glass and wood, photographs and clay objects, as well as other media.
Before weaving her imaginative baskets, Tina Puckett says she goes through a creative process that's similar to doodling. "My woven pieces have varied functions. Some have utility like the humble egg baskets from New England. A lot of my objects, such as my wall hangers, come from 'doodling.' Doodling helps me visualize form and technique," she says.
Other artists featured include New York City goldsmith Christine Mackella who won the prestigious 2011 Niche Award for her Hortensia Blossom necklace. She builds her one of a kind jewelry by hand-fabricating and embossing hollow-formed gold and silver with pearls and stones.Marla Duran, a former contestant on Bravo TVs show "Project Runway," will also be exhibiting her work, Asian and vintage inspired classic womens clothing. And Maryville, Tenn. artist Marcella Toro will show her exquisitely crafted furniture from exotic hardwoods and woven leather.
CraftWestport, on November 20 and 21 at Staples High School, is presented by the Westport Young Womans League. All proceeds form the event are donated to charity. Admission is $6 and $9.
