In literature, roses often symbolize love, beauty and perfection. And in real life, gardeners know they can be finicky pains in the neck. This is just one of the contradictions of this classic, much-loved flower. For more rose lore, Pequot Library presents a talk on May 23 with Stephen Scanniello, president of the Heritage Rose Foundation, GROW Award recipient, and the gardener who transformed the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens rose garden into one of the worlds most acclaimed. He and Douglas Brenner, former editor of "Garden Design" and "Martha Stewart Living," teamed up to bring readers a picture-perfect rose miscellany. The origins, history, and lore of more than 1,200 rose names are included in A Rose by Any Name: the Little-Known Lore and Deep-Rooted History of Rose Names. Scanniello's talk will include fascinating facts and entertaining anecdotes from his book. Refreshments will be served after the program, which is free and takes place from 4-6 p.m.For more information, visit The Pequot Library's website.
