Author Deconstructs WSJ Sale

When media reporter Sarah Ellison saw a hurricane of a story gathering force, she decided to step into its path. After spending ten years working in Paris, London and New York for The Wall Street Journal, she wrote a book about a developing news blockbuster: the sale of The Wall Street Journal. Titled, "War at the Wall Street Journal," her book tracks what happened when a "for sale" sign went up at the venerable newspaper, and the resulting implosion of its owners' family dynasty (the Bancrofts), the machinations of the relentless mogul (Rupert Murdoch) who coveted it, and the re-vamping of  a newspaper two million readers depended on.

The NY Times review of Ellison's book praised her dimensional coverage of the multi-layered story. "Ellison, a former reporter at The Journal, covered the takeover in real time for the very newspaper Murdoch was scheming to acquire. She gracefully slips back and forth across enemy lines, gathering intelligence from all sides and using her precious face time with Murdoch and his adult children..." And the New Yorker Magazine's Ken Auletta called it "a superb book about a momentous event that we knew less about than we thought... a saga populated by powerful moguls and institutions, by double-dealing individuals and a dysfunctional family."Come hear Ellison describe how she wrangled this very large story, when she gives a talk at Southport's Pequot Library on September 26 from 4-6 p.m. The event is free.
