Art Lines Up Outdoors

Look at art outdoors, and you'll see it in a whole new light. That's how the work of 91 artists, from across the country, can be seen when they display their paintings, photography, drawings, prints, sculptures and mixed media pieces at the Bruce Museum's Outdoor Arts Festival, October 9 and 10. “This year’s event showcases artists from 22 states and Canada,” says Festival Director Sue Brown Gordon.

The show is also a competition, with cash awards in six categories: oils and acrylic on canvas; watercolor and acrylic on paper and under glass; graphics and drawings; mixed media; sculpture and photography. Two other awards, “Museum’s Choice Award” and “Best in Show" will also be bestowed. Southbury artist James Carter, who creates acrylic paintings, is one of the 91 exhibitors at the Festival. On his blog, he describes the how and why of his art. "The creation of my acrylic paintings is achieved by the use of airbrush and traditional brush work. The work is done on both canvas and illustration board which is first primed and sanded to produce a smooth, tight and realistic subject. I strive to give the viewer a fresh, whimsical perspective of familiar, and not so familiar, situations."For younger art lovers, live music from the band Ubuntu, a rootsy rock ensemble, is performed at the Festival both days, noon to 4 p.m. Also planned are entertaining educational family activities to help kids express their artistic sensibilities. There's a menu of tempting food to choose from as well.As an incentive to joining the Bruce Museum, many exhibitors offer member discounts for purchases made during the Festival. But whether you're in the market for art or not, meeting the artists, in conjunction with seeing their creations, is a unique opportunity. “(The artists) are encouraged to interact with the festival patrons, providing an entertaining and educational cultural experience," says Gordon. Visitors can also take a swing through The Bruce Museum, which is open during the Festival. Admission to the Festival and the Museum is $8. Hours are: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the museum's website.
