Amble Over to Ambler Farm Day

While most farms are downshifting into slower gear now that it's fall, Ambler Farm is accelerating, in anticipation of its signature celebration, Ambler Farm Day. For the tenth year, on October 3, the farm shows off its harvest, barnyard residents, and its spectacular landscape. Besides its attractions, there is a menu of activities -- and food -- to entice guests. Stop in from noon to 4 p.m. and jump right on a hay wagon for a ride that surveys the farm's 18 acres of vistas. Visit the farm animals and then, meander among in-season produce and flower arrangements, created with the farm's flowers, at the garden market. Learn how to make a pie, pull together a do-it-yourself broom or work with wood. Children can craft their own creations out of natural materials, including a scarecrow. Live music keeps things humming while families navigate the challenging hay maze or fire off an apple slingshot. And, the event culminates with the much heralded yearly pumpkin catapult.

The celebration pays homage to the farm, which dates back to 1794, and its 22 acres purchased by Wilton in 1999. Ambler Farm functioned continuously as a farm until 1988 and was lived in by a member of the Ambler family until her death in 1998. Besides its land, its buildings are historic and the celebration includes a Raymond Ambler House Restoration Exhibit, a documentary video on the project and talks with those restoring the 1799 farmhouse. Admission to Ambler Farm Day is $20 per family and $10 for senior citizens. For more information, visit the farm's website.
