"A Chorus Line" Kicks Off

When it opened in 1976, "A Chorus Line" jolted Broadway audiences with the authenticity of its taken-from-real-life stories of 17 dancers auditioning for a show. Emotional as well as minmalist, critics also lauded the originality of its picture of behind-the-scenes Broadway. "A Chorus Line" opens with a bare stage where casting is starting for a show. Each dancer waiting to try out shares a personal story through which we learn their hopes, dreams and disappointments. John Simon writing in New York Magazine, called it "both innovative and piquant."

Created by the brilliant choreographer-director Michael Bennett from workshops with professional dancers, "A Chorus Line" was such a smash hit it ran for more than 15 years and 6,000 performances on Broadway, making it among the longest-running shows ever. It was showered with awards, including 12 Tonys and a Pulitzer.

Now Michael Bennett's former assistant choreographer from the original run of "A Chorus Line," Baayork Lee, who also played the original Connie, directs and re-stages "A Chorus Line." Catch her revised and revamped singular sensation when it plays at New Haven's Shubert Theater from October 1-3. Tickets are $15-$75. For more information, visit the Shubert's website.
