"42nd Street" Taps On

Blondes, blondes, blondes and tons of tapping. That's "42nd Street," where you'll "...meet those dancing feet..."  Al Dubin's lyric sets up the quintessential Depression movie starring Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell. With its brilliant, over-the-top staging, camera work and choreography, all courtesy of Busby Berkley, you either love it, or think it's complete camp. For some, the film is dated and ridiculous but everyone agrees (or should!) that the songs and dancing transcend the nonsense.

Movie-review website Hollywood.com suggests the film "42nd Street" is timely again.  "Back in the 30’s, it was just the same. Even out of work and hungry, Americans flocked to the movie theater, and while they didn’t have 'Avatar' to take them into another world, they did have their fair share of escapist entertainment. And if you think the movies of yore can’t provide just as much of an escape as the current technological wackness, you haven’t met Busby Berkley," it says.

Musicals at Richter stages its own "42nd Street" with all the classic songs, ("We're in the Money," "Dames," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," "A Quarter to Nine," "Lullaby of Broadway" and "42nd Street.") There is a bevy of glamorous blonde chorus girls, a sweet romance and Broadway drama (the understudy takes over at the last minute.) So tap on over and forget your troubles, come on get happy. Performances take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 8:30 p.m. through July 24. Grounds open at 7:15 p.m. for picnicking. Tickets are $15-$23.  For more information, visit the Richter website.
