NORWALK, Conn. — The official groundbreaking came Thursday on the eight-story SoNo Residence Inn by Marriott, a 102-room hotel planned for South Main Street near the Norwalk Police Station.

Mayor Harry Rilling and other city dignitaries presided over the ceremony for the hotel, which will offer extended-stay suites.

The developer predicted the hotel will be open within a year.

The hotel will feature an inviting ground-floor lobby and a 2,200-square-foot rooftop terrace with expansive views of Long Island Sound and downtown SoNo. Future guests will also find a lounge, resident bar and a business center.

Small groups will be able to take advantage of 4,000 square feet of meeting and function space.

Stamford-based F.D. Rich & Co. is the developer and contractor and Beinfield & Associates of South Norwalk is the architecture firm that designed the project.

Chartwell Hotels of Nashville, Tenn., will manage the property.
