The Urban Youth Empowerment Program is a 12-month series of work readiness and life skills workshops that provide young people ages 14-21 with the necessary skills to prepare them for entry-level employment, internships and higher education. Students who attend urban youth programs focus on effective reading, writing, critical thinking, speaking and listening skills. The program also strives to give students a basic understanding of banking and financial literacy.
“First Niagara is proud to support the Urban League of Southern Connecticut and its mission to instill economic, employment and civic skills in young people throughout Fairfield County,” said First Niagara senior vice president of community development Paul McCraven. “We are always looking for ways to make the communities we serve better places to live and work; programs like Urban Youth Empowerment are great examples of community partners working hard toward that common goal.”
First Niagara will be honored for its diversity initiatives and contributions to the community at the upcoming Urban League of Southern Connecticut Equal Opportunity Day Gala Thursday, May 19.
The Urban League of Southern Connecticut is one of more than 100 affiliates of the National Urban League. Established in 1910, the Urban League is the nation’s oldest and largest community-based movement for African-Americans and other minorities. Its local affiliates serve more than 2 million people nationwide.
“The Urban League’s UYEP program bridges the gap between basic education and occupational skills for youth who often experience significant barriers to succeeding in the community,” said Urban League president and CEO Valarie Shultz-Wilson.
