Credit Donkey: Stamford-Norwalk Among Best Cities To Get Rich

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Connecticut prides itself as the wealthiest state in nation. And the chances of getting rich are among the best in the nation in metropolitan area of Fairfield County, according to a recent study by a website with the unlikely name of Credit Donkey.

Credit Donkey, a financial education website supported by the credit card industry, ranked the nation's metro areas with populations of 250,000 to 850,000 on three factors: the percentage of high-income households that make $150,000 or more a year; local economic growth; and number of patents granted.

Tied at No. 9 was the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk metropolitan area, where 24.7 percent of the population brought in a high income.

"This economically diverse area includes both affluent Greenwich and some tough neighborhoods in Bridgeport," the study said. "Overall, though, it’s an area where riches are very evident, with nearly a quarter of households making $150,000 or more, putting it No. 1 on our list for that measure. A number of big corporations have their headquarters in Stamford, and the region scored high for innovation with 682 patents. Economic growth was respectable, at 6.1 percent."

The Fairfield County region tied at No. 9 with Colorado Springs. At the top of the list was the Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura area in California. In rankings nearby, the No. 2 area was Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and the No. 7 area was the Albany-Troy-Schenectady area in New York.
