I started my professional life as a research psychologist (not the "do you love your mother" kind). I enjoyed research and teaching, but noticed that I spent most of my non-classroom time writing and editing, often to help other people.

When I left academia, all the "you should be a writer" admonitions followed me to job interviews. I've been squeezing in part-time writing and editing jobs for about 9 years, so now I am happily doing it full time.

Business Magazine Gives Award To Pelham A.G. Williams Co. PELHAM, N.Y. – Pelham-based A.G. Williams Painting Company has won its second small-business award this year. Earlier, Westfair Communications gave them a Family Business Award. On Nov. 1, 914Inc gave A.G. Williams a Small Business Award for their success in Westchester County, one of four awards that the magazine gives. 914Inc takes nominations from hundreds of readers. JCC Rockland Raises Funds For Cystic Fibrosis With Boomer Esiason WEST NYACK, N.Y—Sportscaster and former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason was the keynote speaker at the JCC Rockland Charity Sports Dinner late last month. The event raised funds for research and treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening genetic disease. Those honored at the dinner Carrie Sakin and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski .

Westport Honoring Veterans In Town Hall Ceremony WESTPORT, Conn. -- William Vornkahl, president of the Westport Veterans Council, invites town members to attend Veterans Day services on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Town Hall auditorium. The Westport Community Band will perform marches and patriotic songs at 10:30 a.m., and the service will begin at 11 a.m. Staples High School senior Matt Johnson will deliver a speech, and First Selectman Jim Marpe will read from a proclamation and make additional remarks.

Mount Vernon Independence Club Thanks Voters MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Mount Vernon Independence Club thanks its supporter who campaigned for Independence Club-sponsored candidates, the voters and all of the people of Mount Vernon for listening to third-party candidates. Richard Thomas, Lyndon Williams, Andre Wallace and Lisa Copeland all won their elections Nov. 3. Janice Duarte, who ran solely on the Independence Club party, earned the most votes (1,858) of any Mount Vernon candidate to run only on a third-party line.
