Pavia Returns to New Canaan for Trinity Game

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – When the New Canaan Rams take to the football field at 7 p.m. Friday to challenge the Trinity Catholic High School Crusaders, a familiar face will be in the stands.

Former New Canaan High School Principal Tony Pavia will be at Dunning Field for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference contest, though he’ll be cheering for the guys in green and gold rather than the team wearing red and black as he did in years past.

“I’ll be rooting for Trinity, but I wish all the New Canaan players well,” said Pavia, who was New Canaan’s principal for nine years before leaving for his alma mater last July. “I’ve known the (New Canaan) players for years, but my kids are now the Trinity kids. What I’m hoping for is a good game and a game where everyone is a sportsman.”

Pavia said New Canaan players, students and teachers have contacted him this week to ask whether he would be at the contest. He admits it will be weird returning to the New Canaan High campus so soon after leaving a community he has come to love. “New Canaan is really the closest thing other than Stamford that I have to a hometown, and the people were like my family,” he said. “I’m not just saying that. It’s the truth.”
