New Canaan Swimmer Nominated for Olympic Team

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Megan Hansley of New Canaan has been nominated for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Synchronized Swimming team, it was announced Tuesday night. The roster is subject to approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee and qualification for next year’s Olympic Games in London.

Emma Baranski of Hamden, who trains with the New Canaan Aquianas synchronized swimming team, has been named to the U.S. Junior National training squad.

Hansley, who competes for Stanford University, has been a synchronized swimmer for 11 years. The 20-year-old is a four-time member of the national team and competed for the U.S. this year in the Pan American Games, where the U.S. finished second. She also helped Team USA take third at the Brazil Open this year and was sixth in a duet at the German Open.

Baranski, 16, is a two-time member of the national team. She was fourth in the solo competition at this year’s U.S. championships and helped the Aquianas finish seventh. Baranski and Hansley work or have worked with Aquianas head coach Jen Muzyk.

Leah Pinette, of Bristol, is a former Aquinas swimmer who was also nominated for the Olympic team. Emily Drew is also on the national training squad, and also competes for the Aquianas. She is a recent transfer from Seattle.

New Canaan could have several Olympians next summer. Rowers Andrew Campbell and Charlie Cole also have good chances to make the U.S. team.
