Officials voted 4-1 (Crum against) to begin charging handicapped permit-holders who park in designated spaces in the lots at Morse Court and Center School, according to city documents.
During the meeting, Chairman Keith Richey stated that handicapped motorists park for free on downtown streets such as Elm, just as non-handicapped people do.
Officials said that other visitors to the lots pay and there was no reason why the handicapped space users shouldn't pay as well.
Some worried that the meters and pay machines were mid-block making it difficult for handicapped to reach, but other members agreed they could come up with a grace period for those that are late, etc.
The cost of parking in the spots is 50 cents.
First Selectman Kevin Moynihan pointed out that other towns charge handicapped permit-holders for parking.
The town said there were several issues they needed to address, such as handicapped spaces needing numbers assigned to them, before the practice could begin.
