Stephen Sheridan Sr., 76, New Canaan Plumber

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Stephen Patrick Sheridan Sr. of New Canaan died Feb. 16 at his home, surrounded by family. He was 76.

Sheridan was born Aug. 18, 1936, in New Canaan to John B. and Mary Josephine Mullarkey Sheridan. He graduated from New Canaan High School in 1955.

Despite earning a college scholarship, he chose to work in the family business, John B. Sheridan and Son Plumbing and Heating.

He was licensed in his trade before he earned a driver's license. He became a union member in 1970 and was a member of Local 311, 173 and 777 of Connecticut, serving a term as president.

Sheridan served in the Army Reserve for two years with active duty in Fort Bragg, N.C., and he completed his service in 1964. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He had a great passion for horses and rode as a young man for New Canaan Mounted Troop.

He was predeceased by his wife, Brenda Lahey Sheridan.

Sheridan is survived by a son, Stephen P. Sheridan Jr., of New Canaan; a daughter, Caroline Brooke Sheridan, of Berthoud, Colo.; his good friend, Sheila Nicholson, of New Port Richey, Fla.; his former wife, Dorothy Hemmings-Bassett, of Cape Cod; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Gray Sheridan; and six siblings, John Jr., Daniel, William, Edmund, Ann and Peter.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, at St. Aloysius Church. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Norwalk.
