Betty Roth, 81, Longtime New Canaan Resident

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Betty Louise Roth, a resident of New Canaan for more than 35 years, died Aug. 3 at Norwalk Hospital. She was 81.

Born Nov. 12, 1930, Roth was the daughter of Clarence and Roxanna Parrish Urffer. In her senior year at Radnor High School in Wayne, Pa., Roth played center forward on the field hockey team.

She met her husband, William C. Roth, while they both attended Davis and Elkins College. She was a member of Chi Omega at the school. Once married, she and her family moved from the suburbs of Philadelphia to Westport and Evergreen, Colo., before settling in New Canaan.

Roth's family said she was a true patriot and a frequent contributor to causes honoring the national heritage, as well as cancer research, animal welfare and nature.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bill; a son, Douglas Stuart (Lu-Ann) Roth, of Bethel, Conn., two sisters, Margaret J. Africa, of Ardmore, Pa., and Joanne Tilley, of Marietta, Ga. Roth was predeceased by a son, William "Chip" C. Roth III, in 1976.

Funeral services and burial will be held privately. Hoyt Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Davis and Elkins College, 100 Campus Drive, Elkins, WV 26241, or the Nature Conservancy.
