Man Who Crashed Into Tree Arrested

Town police arrested a Middlebury man who allegedly crashed his SUV into a tree last week and then asked its owners not to alert officers as he left the scene.

Richard J. Rompre, 63, of 171 Acme Drive, was charged Aug. 31 with driving under the influence, evading responsibility and failure to drive responsibly. Police said Rompre was driving his Saturn SUV on Silvermine Road at about 8:36 p.m. when the vehicle went off the road and hit a tree. The property is on Silvermine Road east of Canoe Hill Road.

He was not injured in the crash. Police said Rompre told the owners of the tree not to call police about the accident and told them he would walk to Silver Hill Hospital for substance rehabilitation. Rompre is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.
