Dashboard Failure Could Hide Speed Or Warning Lights, Prompting Recall Of 44K+ Audis

Audi is recalling nearly 45,000 vehicles because a dashboard glitch could prevent drivers from seeing their speed or critical warning lights, officials said.

The recall affects about 44,387 Audi vehicles from model year 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Recalled models include the A6, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, RS6 Avant, RS7, RSQ8, S6, S7, S8, SQ7, and SQ8.

A software error can cause the instrument panel display to fail, the NHTSA said. Drivers might lose access to vital information like their speedometer or warning lights – increasing the risk of a crash.

The issue is linked to age-related damage in a flex-foil cable that runs through Audi's digital dashboard, also known as the "virtual cockpit." Audi has received at least 2,285 complaints, but no injuries, crashes, or fires have been reported.

Audi first learned about the issue in April 2024 after complaints from drivers in foreign markets. The company investigated the cause for several months and identified the damaged flex-foil cable as the likely source of the problem.

The repair involves a software update that will allow important information – like speed and engine revolutions per minute – to continue displaying even if the dashboard detects cable damage. The updated software also triggers a warning light to alert drivers to visit a service center.

Audi plans to notify owners by mail starting Friday, May 30. Dealers will update the instrument panel module software for free.

Owners with questions can call Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 or the NHTSA's vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
