Fiery Crash: Bridge, Buildings On Fire After Oil Tanker Overturns in New London, Police Say

Several buildings under a Connecticut bridge on I-95 are on fire, closing lanes and causing heavy black smoke in the area.

According to the Connecticut State Police, the fire started in New London County on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge around 11 a.m. in the New London and Groton areas when an oil tanker rolled over causing a fire on the bridge which caused several buildings under the bridge to catch fire. 

Injuries have been reported, but state police did not have specific details.

State Police said as of 1 p.m., all northbound lanes have reopened; the southbound lanes remain closed.

Motorists are requested to avoid the area.

Police are working to gain additional information.
