Waterbury Man Gets 8 Years In Prison For Botched Kidnapping, Shooting
A Connecticut man who tried to kidnap a Western Massachusetts man at gunpoint on New Year's Eve 2022, but shot him instead when the man fought back, will serve eight years behind bars, authorities said.
New Haven County Marc A. Veturis, 29, of Waterbury, pleaded guilty on Thursday, March 28, to multiple felonies linked to the shooting, the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said.
The charges come from a Hampshire County incident on Mill Valley Road in Hadley.

A 28-year-old Connecticut man accused of shooting a Hadley man on New Year's Eve will be held in jail until a court can decide if he poses a threat to the community if given bail, authorities said.

Woman Charged After Bicyclist Killed In Crash In Region
A Western Massachusetts woman who struck and killed a bicyclist will face charges of negligent motor vehicle homicide, authorities said.
Hampshire County resident Haley Kelly-Sherette, age 23, of Williamsburg, will be arraigned Friday, Nov. 5 in connection with the death of 69-year-old Charles Braun.
The investigation revealed Kelly-Sherette failed to stop for a stop sign as she used Facetime while driving, said Laurie Loisel, director of communications for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

Western Massachusetts Man Killed After Losing Control Of Vehicle, Police Say
A 59-year-old man was killed after he lost control of his car negotiating a curve and collided head-on with another vehicle in the opposite lane, according to police.
The crash took place shortly before 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 5, in Worcester County, near 49 South Main St., in Athol, said the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.
The man, from the Town of Orange in Franklin County, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the DA's Office said.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Suspect Arrested In Death Of Western Mass Pedestrian, DA's Office Says
Police have arrested a Western Mass man in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian.
The Franklin County crash, which killed a 45-year-old Shelburne Falls resident, took place around 6:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, along Route 2 in Shelburne, said Laurie Loisel, with the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.
According to Loisel, the pedestrian, who was walking along Route 2 with a companion was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested a 51-year-old Northampton man in connection with the crash.

Body Found In Connecticut River ID'd As Missing College Student
A body found in the Connecticut River has been identified as a college student who was reported missing last year.
The body of Wasique Hasan, age 21, of Easthampton, Massachusetts, was discovered in Hampshire County Friday, May 21, by a boater in Hadley, said the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
No foul play is suspected.
Hasan, who attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, had been reported missing by his family on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and his name was then entered into the National Crime Information Center as a missing person.

Authorities are continuing investigating a motor vehicle crash in Western Mass that left one man dead.
The crash took place at 2:15 p.m., Saturday, May 15, in Hampshire County when a motorcycle traveling west on Route 9 collided with a motor vehicle traveling eastbound in Belchertown, just west of the Ware town line, said the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
