Students living in the Garrigus Suites on the Storrs campus have been asked to quarantine after nine of the school’s 10 new cases on Thursday were traced back that particular dorm, the school said in a statement.

“Every student who tested positive has been placed into dedicated isolation space on campus, like other on-campus positive cases,” school officials said.

While students who have tested positive were moved to COVID-19 isolation beds reserved on campus, the rest of the students have been quarantined in their dorm.

A total of 62 UConn students — 52 living on campus and 10 commuting students — have tested positive for COVID-19 since returning to campus.

“The nine new Garrigus cases today are in addition to the 12 new cases associated with Garrigus announced earlier this week following the mass testing of Garrigus residents,” officials said.

“Because of the continued growth of the prevalence of the virus within this residence hall, the University is notifying all students who live in Garrigus that the entire building is being placed under medical quarantine.”

While welcoming thousands of students back to campus, UConn has tested 5,968 students living on campus for COVID-19, which has found an infection rate of 0.84 percent. Five students have contracted the virus, were quarantined, and have since recovered.

“The quarantine will need to continue until a clear decrease in transmission can be documented through serial testing,” officials said. “All residents in Garrigus will be tested twice a week, and there is an adjacent dining hall that will be open only to Garrigus residents during this quarantine period.”
