The Greenwich Legion senior baseball team was on the cusp of clinching the Zone Four title, but ran into stellar pitching from Norwalk Post 12. Todd Lyons no-hit the Cannons in game one of a doubleheader and failed to capitalize on key situations in game two as Norwalk snatched away the Zone title.
Game one featured duel no-hitters through the first four and two-thirds innings. Greenwich starter Grant Johnson matched Norwalk's Todd Lyons out for out until the fifth inning when Norwalk capitalized on back-to-back walks. Lyons threw almost exclusively fastballs and the Cannons simply could not catch up. Greenwich dropped game one, 2-0.
"I don't know if it was our offense or their pitching," Greenwich head coach Mike Abate said. "Lyons came out and threw a great game. He basically got the job done on one pitch."
Greenwich could not get a runner past second base until the fifth inning of game two when Kevin Collins finally put the Cannons on the board with a two-out RBI single. Greenwich squandered a golden opportunity in the bottom of the sixth with men on second and third and one out, but failed to push across the tying run.
Greenwich kept the game close with two stellar defensive plays including centerfielder Rob Catalano throwing out a runner at the plate and catcher Greg Bayliss gunning down Norwalk's Bryan Danielo attempting to steal third in the sixth. Greenwich lost game two, 2-1. Despite losing the Zone title, Greenwich still qualifies for an at-large bid in the state tournament.
"It's good facing guys like this before going into the state tournament so your team is a little more focused," Abate said. "These are the types of games you're going to get in the state tournament. I'm proud of my guys. They're ready to get to the state tournament and make a good run.
