The Greenwich Knights of Columbus is trying to make college a little more affordable for local students. More than 100 golfers hit the links Monday at Griffith E. Harris Golf Course for the annual Knights of Columbus Ed Kavanagh Memorial Golf Outing. All of the proceeds raised go to the Ed Kavanagh scholarship fund.
"Giving back to the community is very important to the Knights of Columbus," tournament Chairman Dan Farrell said. "Corporate sponsorships and player donations are the sole revenue stream for this tournament, so we're blessed to have a wonderful turnout."
According to Farrell, this year's tournament raised "in excess of $10,000." This year's recipients will be determined later in the school year. Last year, the tournament raised enough money to give scholarships to eight students.
Ed Kavanagh was a longtime active member of the Greenwich Knights of Columbus who died suddenly. The organization also holds fundraisers throughout the year for Abilis, Meals on Wheels and veterans programs, among others.
Red Malone won the "JetBlue Closest to the Pin Challenge" at the tournament. He was awarded airfare and accommodations for two to anywhere JetBlue flies.
