Kids Take a Whack at Tennis

It's never too early to learn how to play tennis. Town tennis director Pat Cianciulli teaches the fundamentals of the game at a camp for 4- to 7-year-olds at the Bruce Park Tennis Courts. He is thrilled by the turnout this summer and excited to pass on his passion for tennis to young kids.

"They're a cute bunch of girls and boys," Cianculli said. "The instructors love it and the kids love them. We always have kids come back and always seem to have full sessions."

The instructors had no problem getting the campers' attention at a recent session. The young players eagerly awaited volleys at the net, wielding racquets almost as big as they were.

Instructors break the game down to its basics to get kids excited about the sport. Campers are taught how to make contact on volleys, racquet control, bouncing the ball with the racquet, and sometimes moving up to forehands by the end of the weeklong sessions.

"We want them to have a lot of fun here while they're learning," Cianculli said. "It's a good experience for them here."

Two weeklong sessions remain open for signups. For more information, call the Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation at (203) 622-7830.
