Greenwich Swimming Lags Again in Conference

GREENWICH, Conn. – The Greenwich High School girls swim team has company. For the first time in more than 30 years, a different team won back-to-back conference championships. New Canaan edged Greenwich for the second year in a row Saturday, 396 to 334.

The meet got off to a bumpy start for Greenwich, falling to Wilton in a surprise finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Lauren Church claimed Greenwich’s only first-place finish of the evening, taking the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.35 seconds.

New Canaan solidified first place with top finishes in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Greenwich finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with the team of Church, Sam Hill, Kim Hill and Morgan Karetnick in a time of 3:37.58. The Cardinals took third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with the team of the Hill sisters, Porter Carlson and Madeleine Dunn in 1:41.19.

Other high finishes for Greenwich included a second place finish by Karetnick in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.20 seconds. Dunn took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.99 seconds.

New Canaan will compete in the Class LL state meet Thursday, Nov. 17, at Southern Connecticut State University and in the State Open on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Yale.
