GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich High girls ice hockey team has come a long way since last season when the Cardinals missed out on the conference and state playoffs. Now Greenwich will get a shot at its first-ever conference championship Saturday at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford at 4 p.m.
Greenwich (10-4 in the conference) will have to go through the juggernaut of the league to nab the elusive title, however. The Cardinals take on New Canaan, which is a perfect 14-0 in conference play. The Rams are trying for their third straight conference title and are playing in their eighth straight championship game.
New Canaan has long been a thorn in the side of the Cardinals. The Rams defeated Greenwich in the 2005 conference finals, the 2008 state finals and the 2009 state semifinals. The 2012 showdown promises to be tough for Greenwich again. New Canaan is led by Olivia Hompe, a junior has posted back-to-back 60-plus-goal seasons.
Greenwich's leading scorer Hannah Jeffrey, who scored a third-period hat trick in the semifinals to lift the Cardinals to victory, said she is thrilled to have a shot at the title. "As a team this is a great accomplishment for us because we didn't even qualify for the playoffs last year," she said. "To go to the final as a senior is an awesome feeling."
New Canaan trounced Greenwich in the two meetings between the teams earlier this season, 7-1 and 6-2.
