Greenwich's Eastern Middle Assistant Principal Chosen

GREENWICH, Conn. – Social studies teacher Joanna Von Hollen was appointed assistant principal for Eastern Middle School, Interim Superintendent of Schools Roger Lulow announced Wednesday.

Von Hollen began teaching in 2005 at Central Middle School in the Greenwich Public Schools before transferring in 2006 to Eastern Middle School. She completed a two-year administrative internship with Principal Ralph Mayo in May of this year.

“Ms. Von Hollen impressed us, not only with her content knowledge, but also with her in-depth understanding and articulation of data, instructional best practices and vision for the students and the school,” said Lulow, in a prepared statement, adding that Von Hollen’s experience with Eastern and with Mayo will help create a smooth transition in leadership.

Mayo said in a release, "The breadth and depth of Ms. Von Hollen's knowledge, her ability to articulate that knowledge and her interpersonal communication skills are all exemplary. In every setting, I am invariably impressed with the high level of skill she possesses, and the high quality of her interactions with her colleagues, her students and their parents."

Von Hollen received a bachelor's degree in social science and public and community service studies from Providence College in Rhode Island in 2004 as well as a master's degree in teaching in secondary education from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield in 2005. She completed her sixth-year degree in educational leadership at the University of Connecticut in Storrs in 2012.

Von Hollen will begin her position effective July 1.
