Greenwich Gifted Student Program To Get New Leader

Greenwich’s most advanced students will now have a new leader in the school district’s gifted program, Superintendent Sidney A. Freund announced Tuesday.

The district put out an in-house notice to Greenwich Education Association staff members for a new full-time position of facilitator for the Advanced Learning Program.

Gifted students are challenged through the program with faster paced curriculum that emphasizes self-directed learning. The program begins for grades 2 through 5 with studies that advance a level or two above what would typically be taught. Special classes are also offered, such as “Kids with a Purpose” at Parkway School, where students are given leadership and community service opportunities. At the upper levels, students take honors classes and leadership electives.

The new facilitator will coach program teachers and will be responsible for identification and notification processes, communicating with families of gifted students and staff development.

John Grasso, principal of Riverside School and interim coordinator for the program, will continue to oversee the program’s review, currently under way and scheduled for completion by fall. The review looks at trends and directions in gifted education and identifies screening and assessment processes. As of July 1, Grasso will return to his full-time role at Riverside.
