GREENWICH, Conn. A drop in the all-important SAT scores of Greenwich seniors is being called "statistically insignificant" by the school district.
Scores for the graduating class of 2012 dropped seven points in math, three points in critical reading and three points in writing from students who took the test in 2011, the school district said in a release.
The mean scores for 2012 seniors was 563 in reading, 578 in math and 576 in writing. The top score in each subject is 800. Some 88 percent of graduating seniors took the test.
"While the scores for the Class of 2012 are slightly lower than that of the Class of 2011, the 2012 results maintain the upward trend of the GHS graduates' scores overall over the last 10 years," Superintendent Bill McKersie said.
Seventeen Greenwich High students were recently named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, which was tied for second highest number of any school in the state. Also, 45 percent of 2012 graduates got college credit for taking one or more advanced placement exams, the district said.
"There is not one measure, not a single test that will provide the full picture of how well-prepared our students are for college," McKersie said. "SAT scores are a very important measure, but not the only one. Even the best universities look at multiple measures, not just the SAT or the ACT, it is the same for the Greenwich Public Schools."
