Greenwich Academy celebrated its 184th Charter Day with such longstanding traditions as the Maypole dance, the announcement of new school officers, the Group IV song and a chorus of Happy Birthday by the pre-connecting and connecting girls.
The girls of Group IV explained the significance of the Maypole dances as they related to their journey through Lower School. The dances, the Spider Web and the Basketweave, have been a rite of passage for Lower School girls for nearly 40 years. Each dance celebrates how each girl contributes to her community. The intricately woven ribbons make a statement of how to work together to reach a goal and serve others.
Head of School Molly King commended students on their community service throughout the year and highlighted the number of books read in each school division. She also gave thanks for the funds raised to support the Room to Read project, a worldwide literacy campaign focusing on education and literacy of girls and young women.
The girls were treated to a cookout and carnival, planned and coordinated by Upper School students, that included popular games, face-painting stations and alumnae cupcake decorating. All the proceeds from the day will go to support community service projects.
